Nowra is one of the major commercial centres
of the South Coast, New South Wales. With a relaxing laidback
atmosphere, the bustling town, also services the Naval base at Jervis Bay. Nowra was originally spelt Nou-woo-ro with the Aboriginal
meaning of 'camping place' or 'black cockatoo'.

Nowra is located on Southern banks of the beautiful Shoalhaven River with the adjoining town of Bomaderry located on the northern banks of the Shoalhaven River. Bomaderry is the southernmost coastal area from where you can join the New South Wales train services. It is also the main dairy centre of Nowra, producing a range of dairy products. Other major industries within the Nowra region include flour, paper, timber, tourism and vegetables. |
There are a wide range of attractions
and places of interest located in and around Nowra. For the adventurous
traveller many companies offer adventure holidays and activities
within the Nowra region, including canoeing, scuba diving, white-water
rafting, parachuting, cycling and skydiving.
Around Nowra you will find several historic buildings and museums, which are worth visiting. The Shoalhaven Historical Museum (1900) is located within the old police premises and is open in the afternoon on weekends and public holidays. You should also visit 'Meroogal' (1885), a gothic-style house situated on the corner of West and Worrigee Streets, also open on weekends and bank holidays. |
