The Mid-North Coast starts at the area around Port
Macquarie, a large coastal resort offering good
landscape scenery as well as plenty of things to do, and
heads north until Grafton.
There are some great beaches along the coast, as well as
some attractive farming communities inland.
|
A short drive south from Port Macquarie are several small coastal resorts. For good beaches and surf visit Bonnie Hills or Lake Cathie.
Heading north from Port Macquarie you can visit
the beautiful landscape surrounding the South West Rocks. Along
the coastline and the bay near South West Rocks you should visit
Trial Bay Gaol, which is packed with interesting history.
|
From Port Macquarie you can follow the coastal
route which runs past the Limeburners Creek Nature Reserve
to Point Plomer, although this route is for 4WD only. However,
if you want a seriously relaxed lifestyle then definitely
visit Point Plomer. It also offers great surf, so be sure
to take your board with you.

 |
 |
There is a small campsite at Point Plomer, although
you should take you own supplies as the only other thing there
is great surf and excellent fishing. (Not too much of a down side).
You can also access this road by a vehicle ferry which leaves
from Port Macquarie.
West of Port Macquarie on the Pacific Highway
is the historic timber town of Wauchope, situated along the Hastings
River. The countryside surrounding Wauchope is really beautiful,
made up of forest ranges and pretty streams. Cameron Street is
the centre of Wauchope's country town and offers plenty of shopping
and a taste of original Wauchope. You can also visit Timbertown,
which is a wonderful re-creation of an old village. From Wauchope
you can visit the fabulous Cobrabald, Slippery Rock and the Wilson
Rainforest Reserve, where you will find some good swimming spots.
 |
|
Further along the Pacific Highway you will pass through Kempsey, a large farming town. There is an interesting museum and cultural centre if you want to stop along the way. East from this is the small coastal town of Crescent Head. Crescent Head is known by surfers as the surf long-boarding capital of Australia, and so obviously has a good surfing beach. There are several coastal parks offering accommodation, although there are also a number of places in the town itself. |
Further north along the coast is Hat Head, which
offers a small selection of accommodation and a beautiful quiet
beach. The area is surrounded by the Hat Head National Park which
makes a fabulous backdrop to the little coastal resort. Hat Head
is also home to the Smoky Cape Lighthouse, the tallest in NSW.
Further north again is South West Rocks. The main attraction here
is fishing and other various water sports, although the Trial
Bay Gaol is also a very interesting place to visit. Buses run
between these two places 3 times a day, and are both worth visiting.

|
Nambucca Heads is a pretty coastal town off of the Pacific Highway. Further inland are two places of major interest, Bellingen and Dorrigo. North from Coffs Harbour are two small, but pretty places. Woolgoolga has a good surf beach and a large Indian population. Red Rock is a quiet place right on the coast with beautiful views. |
From here the Yuraygir National Park takes you to Grafton and the Far North Coast of NSW. There are some excellent walking trails along the coast and some pretty little beaches, as well as several campsites along the way |
