Richmond is a historic town along the Coal River,
around 24km from Hobart. Richmond is filled with stunning Georgian architecture that has been well restored. The village has charming cobblestone roads, cottages and you can marvel at gems not found anywhere else in Australia.
A vocal point of the Richmond township is the Richmond Gaol (now a museum), built in the 1800's, the gaol is an eerie place where you can see an insight into where the Van Diemen's Land's convicts, bushrangers and aborigines lived out their gaol terms.
Richmond is home to Australia's oldest bridge, which was built by convicts and is now a heritage listed site.
There are numerous churches that are
worth visiting especially St John's Catholic Church, which is Australia's oldest remaining Catholic Church. Another interesting place to visit while in Richmond is the Old Hobart Model Village where you can see a detailed model of old Hobart Town.
There are a range of arts and crafts boutiques in the area along with an amusement park to entertain the children. Plus some great shopping and excellent meals are also available in Richmond.
Some pleasant places to stay, together with some small and pretty eating areas and the local history makes Richmond an interesting place to visit.
