Kapunda can be reached directly from Adelaide, or via the more scenic route through the Barossa Valley. Kapunda was the first mining town in the whole of Australia, after copper was found in the area, although the mines all closed in 1912. There is a very interesting walk that guides you around the mining area, as well as a great lookout that allows you to see across the region.

There are a couple of good museums which tell you about the history of the area, as well as a large bronze statue in remembrance to all of the miners and other things to do in the area. There are also some good places to stay, if you feel like a touch of history.
