Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park

The Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park covers a wide area, and is home to the Franklin, Gordon and Olga Rivers. The Lyell Highway runs through the spectacular rainforest of the park, and there are several bushwalks that you can take from the roadside as you are driving through, including Donaghys Hill and Nelson Falls, which are both fantastic to see. Frenchmans Cap about 20km from the Lyell Highway offers excellent bushwalking. Also worth visiting is the Kutikina Cave, an Aboriginal site situated south again of Frenchmans Cap.

Another activity that you can get involved in is water rafting along the wild and ferocious Franklin River. You can do this independently or with a tour, although trips take upto 14 days to complete. Before starting your journey it is vital to register your trip at the Franklin River booth 50km west of Derwent Bridge. For more information about safety aspects and permits contact the Queenstown PWS Office Ph: 6471 2511.
