Bus Travel Services
The main bus company in Australia is Greyhound Australia. They offer service around the whole of Australia,
following most of the major routes. There are also smaller
services which operate around the cities and in specific areas,
offering more comprehensive service within a shorter distance.
There are also other state specific services including Firefly,
Premier Stateliner in SA, V/Line in VIC and Westrail in WA.
Many companies offer discount for YHA, students
and other approved cards and although prices are generally
cheap for individual service, if you plan to do a lot of travelling
by coach then you should check out some of the passes that
the major companies offer.
Greyhound Australia offer several different
passes depending upon what your particular requirements are.
The Aussie Day Pass gives either 7, 10 or 15 days of travel
over 30 days or 21 days of travel over 60 days. This is great
if you are on a holiday visa and have a short amount of time,
although you may not get as much value as with one of the
unlimited travel passes. The Aussie Explorer Pass includes
24 different routes around Australia, which you can choose
and follow like a tour. These include sections of Australia,
as well as a complete loop around the whole of Australia,
and through the Red Centre. Another pass is the Aussie Kilometre
Pass, where you pay for the amount of kilometres that you
travel. You can pay for another (on the $1000 mark) between
$2000 and $20,000, and receive 12 months travel anywhere.
There is also an Australian Roamer Pass works
on kilometres, and you can pay for anything (again on the
$1000 mark) between $2000 and $15,000. The Travel Australia
Pass gives 7 set routes for you to choose from over Australia,
and lasts between 3 and 12 months, depending upon the route
that you choose.
Another great way to get around Australia,
is by the Oz Experience buses. They give service to all of
the major places in Australia, diverting along the route to
some interesting places along the way. You can get on and
off where you please, and stay as long as you like (within
the time limit of your ticket expiry, of course). It is also
a great way to meet friends if you are travelling alone, or
just want to meet new people.
